Experiment #01 - Results

Welcome back brave scientists!

It’s the last day of March and we are checking in on how our first Experiment of the Month has gone! Did you try out a No Expectations Day? How was it? Did it change anything for you?

We have heard from a bunch of you about how having a low key, No Expectations Day has been a central part of your neurodivergent lives. You told me that it helps you to recentre and to come back to yourself in the midst of burnout, and is a part of standard self-care to stay out of extreme burnout. Some of you are even teaching your kiddos how to have No Expectations Days for themselves. How cool is that?

Burnout Prevention

Three regular matches in a row, followed by a burnt match, and a match that is starting to grow a leaf.

In last weeks blog we talked about some short term, first-aid like adjustments that you can employ to support yourself in and around burnout. We touched on Sensory Needs, Special Interests, and learning how self-care can be thought of as Self Parenting. Since the No Expectations Day brought up burnout prevention for so many of you, we are going to dig into it more.

Strategies for Change

When we are talking about making big changes in our lives we can think of them as happening at two paces. There is the long term, turtle pace of systems change that we dream about. It’s made of long term changes that have the capacity to make lasting difference for you in the system you are in. There is also the short term, rabbit paced, first-aid type response that allows you to continue to survive in the situations you are currently in.

Approaching change this way can support our brains and bodies as we move away from neurodivergent burnout and toward a life that is more sustainable. We can take short term actions like the ones we talked about in my last blog (read it here) and we can also start the process of taking longer term actions that make your life less burnout prone.

A regular No Expectations Day could be one part of your long term change. This first experiment could be the start of your journey towards making your life more supportive for your neurodivergent self.
